About the market:

Uzbekistan has significant investment attractiveness. The advantages of the country are its political and economic stability, favorable geographical position, accelerated infrastructural development, and rich mineral resources base.

According to forecasts by the Asian Development Bank, in 2010 Uzbekistan’s economy will grow by 8.5%, and in 2011 by 9%, which is one of the highest indicators in the Asia-Pacific region.

In Uzbekistan, there is growing demand for PVC each year, which is proportionally related to the requirements of building materials, cables, pipelines and other industries that use PVC. Given the development of the national economy, an increase in PVC demand is expected. In Uzbekistan, there are manufacturing facilities that use PVC as raw material, which is supplied by import. The main suppliers of PVC to Uzbekistan are Russia, Ukraine and China. Imports of PVC to Uzbekistan in January-June 2009 amounted to 14,968.7 tonnes.

Uzbekistan is home to the only gas-chemical plant in Central Asia, the Shurtan Gas-Chemical Complex, which has a projected annual output of over 125,000 tonnes of polyethylene granules. Today, the Shurtan Gas-Chemical Complex produces more than 20-25 commercial brands, which encompass the entire range of polyethylene processing.

An investment agreement to develop the Surgil field, with the construction of the Ustyurt Gas-Chemical Complex, has been signed. The project will cost $4 billion, and is due to be completed before 2012. The Ustyurt Gas-Chemical Complex is designed to produce 362,000 tonnes of polyethylene and 83,000 tonnes of polypropylene.
