Russian PVC market is showing rapid growth and is likely to reach 1 mln metric tons in 2008. Taking to account imports of PVC goods 1 mln metric tons consumption was reached more than two years ago. The moving force of domestic PVC converting industry is developing of profiles, compounds, films, pipes and floor coverings production in Russia&CIS.
However the growth of PVC supplies to the Russian market was provided not by domestic PVC producers working with maximal capacities utilization but by growing imports, mostly from China. Imports boom started in 2005 is continuing and one can hardly believe that 4-5 years ago PVC imports were not exceeding 50 KMT per annum.
Annually increasing PVC import allows develop converting industry as well as new traders enter the market. Some of newly emerged traders take important role at the market and become reliable suppliers. Nevertheless we should remember that most of PVC imports to Russia come from a few Chinese plants and any changes on local market of our Eastern Neighbor can seriously effect Russian market. We hope domestic PVC producers will carry out announced PVC expansion projects in time in order to secure Russian market and to earn their piece of income.
