Subject:
A boom in the UAE's construction section is driving the demand for plastic products, especially pipes and fittings. This, in turn, is driving the growth of the plastics industry, according to a report on the UAE's plastic's industry by the Emirates Industrial Bank.
The versatility of plastic makes the plastic industry one of the most heterogeneous, with links to a large number of economic sectors.
With the expansion of the non-oil economy, demand for plastic products has grown steadily. This has lead to a growth in plastic production which has, over time, reduced dependence on imports.
The industry expanded rapidly in the 1990's and continues to grow, slowly making inroads into the export industry, particularly in the packaging segment.
The largest demand for plastic products in the UAE is still from the construction industry. The demand for these products has risen and fallen with the fortunes of the construction industry, but demand has been stable in the long run. In the last decade, the greater growth spurt has come from plastic products for packaging because of a growing population and greater consumer spending.
These factors have also led to increased demand for household and other consumer plastic products.
